Marco Mazzi studied violin and viola at the Music Conservatory “E.F. Dall’Abaco” in Verona (Italy), graduating in Viola in 2003. He attended the Academy of music “Scuola di Musica di Fiesole” in Florence (2004-2006) studying with J. Kussmaul and A. Farulli. At the same time he was a member of the Italian National Youth Orchestra, and in 2006 he was selected for the “Maggio Musicale Fiorentino” Academy, in Florence. He attended a string quartet masterclass (2006-2007) in Berlin with musicians from Berliner Philharmoniker (S. Bernardini, C. Horak).
After winning in 2002 the “Masi Foundation" Award with the string ensemble Risonanza at the Salieri-Zinetti International Competition (Italy), he participated with the same ensemble to international festivals (St. Petersburg Palaces Festival in Russia, Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico, etc.) and concerts in important Italian theatres, recording CD and DVD.
In 2002-2004 he was member of the Regional Orchestra of Conservatories of Veneto, and in 2004-2006 of the Italian National Youth Orchestra, performing in international concerts and tours in Germany (Konzerthaus in Berlin, Festival Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) and Southern America (Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Teatro Cultura Artistica in São Paulo, Teatro Municipal in Santiago del Chile).
Afterwards, he worked as viola player in professional orchestras in Europe.
In 2005 he won an audition for the Orchestra I Pomeriggi Musicali of Milano (Italy), where he worked periodically until 2013.
In 2007 he moved to Spain, where he worked in the Academy Orchestra of Teatro Liceu in Barcelona.
During the concert season 2008/2009 he played in the Viola section in the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra.
During the academic years 2010/2011 and 2011/2012 he was appointed as professor of violin and viola at the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music, in Ramallah (Palestine). In this role, he was also tutoring chamber music ensembles and the youth orchestra at the ESNCM. During Christmas 2011 he played with the Palestine Youth Orchestra in the Church of Nativity in Bethlehem: the concert was world-broadcasted by the Italian public television RAI.
In 2014 he settled in Durban, South Africa, where he won the position of Viola in the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra. He worked there as full time musician until 2017, and as extra player afterwards, since he became the Viola leader of the Baroque 2000 ensemble.
In South Africa he has accomplished a teaching career, in prestigious institutions as the Kearsney College, the Clifton School and the Durban Girls’ College.
He speaks fluently English, Spanish and Italian. In 2005 he graduated with a BA with Honours in Communications from the University of Padua, Italy.
