Simone De Beauvoir's essay entitled "Pyrrhus and Cineas" was my first exploration into the vast subject that is philosophy. However, what resonated with me the most was not the ideas presented and argued throughout this essay, but the images in which she utilised to represent and visualise these ideas. Of the most ephemeral and kaleidoscopic nature, these images are the subject of this work for chamber orchestra. Presented in miniature form, each image is captured in a single moment, that can be fleeting, or can linger, and is designed to be listened to both as individual moments/miniatures, and as a larger whole. It must be noted that the final miniature is superimposed with the conclusion of the 4th miniature and is a trio for Cor Anglais, Clarinet and Bassoon.
