In the first movement Awakening, the guitar is still inside the case, clasps closed, resulting in the percussive performance on top of the case to evoke vibrations of the guitar that resonate through and out to the listener. The oscillating effect is enhanced by the tuning of the strings in correspondence to the order of notes that appear in the overtone series, the transcultural and universal substructure of music as we perceive it.
Nonetheless, the piece does not rely solely on an auditory phenomenon to function; a defining pulse in 5/8 facilitates a vision of direction and development for both listener and performer, surfacing via different components of guitar and case.
