David Sztanke first learned classical percussion before taking up the piano at the age of 11 and then the alto saxophone shortly after. At 20, he moved to New York to join the Juilliard School as a baritone saxophonist. However, the piano remains his favorite instrument.
In 2006 he created the group Tahiti Boy and the Palmtree Family and collaborated in parallel with many artists (Emilie Simon, Iggy Pop, Saul Williams, Oxmo Puccino) as a composer, producer, arranger or instrumentalist. On the occasion of the album We are The Lilies, he brings together Sérgio Dias from Os Mutantes, Jane Birkin and Iggy Pop.
2009 marked the beginning of his collaborations for the cinema: Mikhaël Hers asked him to compose the soundtrack for his first feature film Memory Lane. Thereafter he will collaborate with many directors: Quentin Dupieux entrusts him with the soundtrack of Wrong, then Au Poste. He composes for Christophe Honoré, Eric Judor or Jérôme Bonnell, Louis Leterrier and many others. He also teamed up with Sébastien Tellier for the series A girl is a gun, for which he also produced the album released later.
The film Les Magnétiques (Vincent Maël Cardona) for which David wrote the music won the César for best 1st film in 2022.
David also produces numerous albums for other artists, such as Sébastien Tellier, Kent or Catastrophe.
David completed 2 series for Netflix this year, a documentary and a fiction (Transatlantic), a film for Netflix too (Cosmetic Valley), and is currently composing the soundtrack for Jérôme Bonnell's next film for Arte. He is also working on an upcoming album under his name. Are invited among other Fire! Chatterton, Jeanne Added, David Krakauer, Bertrand Belin, Gavin Bryars and Vladimir Cosma...
His work is sometimes described as influenced by Michel Legrand, Ennio Morricone or François De Roubaix, despite having worked a lot with the Ed Banger label, for which he easily passes into a more electronic register.
