Birgitta Flick is a composer and improviser from Berlin. She studied saxophone (B.A.) at the Jazz-Institut Berlin (UdK/HfM „Hanns Eisler“) and composition (M.A.) at the Royal College of Music (KMH) in Stockholm. Among her latest compositions are Kamanoina for the Swedish Wind Orchestra and LYSSNA, music to the words of biblical psalms 39 and 40 for amongst others the Swedish choir Vokalensemblen i Sundbyberg. She works also with her Berlin-based quartet, the German-Swedish-Finnish band Flickstick as well as a duo with New York based pianist Carol Liebowitz. She has released several CDs with her own bands and as sidewoman on record labels from Germany, Sweden and the UK. Concert tours and festival appearances have taken her to Sweden, the USA, Bahrain and the Middle East, and in winter 2014-15, to New York City for a three month stay including private studies with pianist and improviser Connie Crothers. Since 2015 she also serves as the musical coordinator of the summer concert series „In Spirit“ at the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtnis-Kirche, Berlin. Her artistic work as e.g. a composition and research project based on traditional Swedish music, has been supported by the Berlin senate, the country of Berlin/UdK, Initiative Musik gGmbH (Germany), JazzBaltica Förderpreis and the Goethe-Institut. Right now she is a scholarship holder of German Musikfonds to write a new choir composition, based on her work with the interdisciplinary improvisation group Glädje Lab from Berlin.
