If you were lucky enough to attend ManiFeste, the Academy last year as a member of the audience, a student, or an auditor, you certainly saw the Ensemble intercontemporain performing. And for good reason: the Ensemble, also know as EIC, has been the never-fallible partner of the Academy since its creation in 2012. After participating to the composition workshop for conducted ensemble and for solo instrument and electronics last year, the EIC will be part of the composition workshops for conducted ensemble and chamber music in ManiFeste-2016, the Academy. This is the occasion to get to know an ensemble like no other in the French music landscape, and its regular collaborations with ManiFeste and the Academy.
The Ensemble intercontemporain and IRCAM share several common points, including a common founder —Pierre Boulez— and a common passion for the music of the 20th and 21st centuries. This passion for creation in music explains the usual collaborations between the Ensemble and the Institute, but also its commitment to ManiFeste-2016, the Academy: every year, the Ensemble intercontemporain offers students composers the opportunity to take advantage of a special relationship with the renowned soloists through a close collaboration. This year, the partnership will take the shape of two composition workshops dedicated to chamber music under the supervision of Rebecca Saunders, and conducted ensemble with Philippe Leroux.
For the conducted ensemble composition workshop, Philippe Leroux asked the eight student composers to propose an open score, which will be worked together with the French composer, the Ensemble and conductor Julien Leroy during the workshop. In the composition workshop for chamber music, Rebecca Saunders asked six young composers to work on timber, through a specific formation with soloists of the Ensemble intercontemporain, make up by clarinet, trombone, piano, viola and cello. In both workshops, exchange and dialogue with musicians and leading composers, will be the core of the success for young composers, who will indubitably learn a lot from the soloists’ experience. Come and discover the result of their collaboration on July 1!
