Have you ever heard music that sounds like an arrow? Or more precisely like the whistling of the plume that steers an arrow? Here is what Rebecca Saunders made with her piece Fletch (2012), inspired by “the physical gesture of the bow which shoots the sound into the space”, to be performed during ManiFeste-2016. The festival will also feature the French premiere of her piece Fury II (2009) and Shadow (2013). She will be part of the Academy, assisting six young composers in the Chamber Music Composition Workshop, with Soloists from the Ensemble intercontemporain.

Rebecca Saunders is a world-renowned Berlin-based British composer who studied composition with Wolfgang Rihm in Karlsruhe and Nigel Osborne in Edinburgh. Her music is influenced by her reflection on musical gesture as well as on space, and the use of mechanical instruments like music boxes. Colours are also very present in her work, be they blue, like Into the Blue (1996) or Blue and Gray (2005), or infinite shades of red, like CRIMSON - Molly's Song 1 (1995), Cinnabar (1999), Vermilion (2003) and Rubricare (2005) from the Latin word for blush, giving to her music the dimension of a unique synesthesic experience.
For the chamber music composition workshop, she asked young composers to work on timbre, reflecting her own interest for this musical issue. In many of her works, including Fletch and Fury II, she aims at reducing the musical material to what is the core of an instrument, both in terms of sound and physically. As she said, she wants to treat “a particular instrument like a protagonist in a theatre piece, try to find the character essence and try to bring that out in the piece”. This workshop and the three pieces performed during ManiFeste-2016 will be a good opportunity for the Academy students to widen their knowledge of this great composer, as well as for Rebecca Saunders to discover IRCAM, with whom she collaborates for the first time. The beginning of a great story.
